My computer is located next to our audio tower for the boxes in the living room. They do not work together and we dont really want it to anyways. The problem is that we like to stream spotify to our boxes using the ipad and there is only one Ethernet port in the living room which is occupied by my pc. the best would be if we could just run another cable to our router but we dont have the money for that. So we are looking into a splitter to connect both to the same port. something like this:

https://www.allekabels.nl/stekker-doos-en-krimptang/188/1169556/netwerk-splitter-cablesharing.html?gclid=CjwKEAiAtefDBRDTnbDnvM735xISJABlvGOvZ_YnDTSFNjLGwmj-LAWJmbPN-_xrpdxeA_6yz0WPdhoCJ9rw_wcB#

the problem with this is that we wont be able to use both the audio and the pc at the same time. but its cheap compared to a switch.

which brings me to a second option which is a switch. i would probably get one of these:

https://www.allekabels.nl/netwerk/netwerk-switch.html

what would be the best option, also which method will have greater speeds and less lag?

i used those splitters and i say they are useless

the switch even the cheap 5 port 10/100 are much better

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

they do not work

i tried it on my cable modem to my two PCs

both end up not getting IP address

what should i look for in a switch? i will game on it so it needs to have a low latency.

i nvr really think anything else

you can have the best cables and switch/routers but when your internet is crappy.

your internet experience will be crap

low latency depends on the internet speed and the connection to the clients and server

i have fiber optic internet so that should not hold it back. will a switch add latency or not?

very little or none

They'll work in the same way a hub does - a completely dumb device. What this means is that you'll end up with collision domains. If device A is transmitting and device B tried to also transmit, you'll have transmission failure -  this is called a collision domain whereby two or more devices are trying to transmit simultaneously.

Transmission domains do still exist in modern networks using switches however they are limited to the switch port and the device connected to it whereas a hub will have collision domain issues with every device connected through it simultaneously.

If your internet is decent and your router's internal switch is gigabit, get a gigabit switch.

For lower latency, get a decent one. Like TPLink, Netgear, DLink or Trendnet.

The really cheap plastic ones are a bit rubbish, and they (Or the power supply) fail after a couple of years.
