I upgraded my system and had 2 x 1TB drives to play with. For my experiment I split the drives into half and then format one half as a simple volume and then combine the other half into a striped volume. The gains were not special compared to my SSDs, but this led me to a different idea. If I were to take 100GB from my 5 drives and create a new striped volume, then I should have a nice scratch disk area that leaves the rest of the data alone in the event of a drive failure. I am not expecting the same performance as hardware raid and I am expecting soso scaling due to the full drive not being used.

Overall I found the idea interesting, but I am not as knowledgeable as many of the form members and would appreciate comments/warnings/advice on the idea.

Thanks in advance!
