Long time viewer (from NCIX days) first time poster!

So let me share my situation:

I am rocking an old Macbook Pro 2011 (late) that I bought with my student discounts in my last year of college, with somewhat aging specs.

Core i7-2860QM (4 cores with HT) Processor @2.5-3.6Ghz

16GB of DDR3 (1600mhz)

AMD Radeon 6770m with 1GB of GDDR5

1TB Samsung Evo 840 SSD

Due to how slow things have really changed on the performance front the last few years, I am still pretty happy with the performance of this old Mac on a day to day basis... except when gaming or doing larger content creation....

I was really looking forward to the new Macbook Pro until Apple announced it... and it utterly sucked. (All USB-C and yet you keep the audio jack?!?!? What the **** Apple!?!?)

The main issue with my current Macbook is the GPU, I feel is the bottleneck and just cannot keep up with newer software titles, and it's laughable how many frames I drop when trying to stream games.

So I am seriously thinking about building a new desktop rig sometime this year (as I don't need the portability) and going back to my PC Windows & Linux roots.

I do some content creating including video editing, 3d modeling and larger code compiles that would benefit from multi-threaded performance.

My budget is about $1200-1800 and I usually like to keep my builds intact for several years and I don't mind investing a little more to future proof the build.

The debate I am having is this:

Do I buy a cheaper used last generation Intel i7 (like the 6700K) as Kaby lake's performance looks basically the same as the last generation?

Or do I wait for AMD Ryzen?

Do you think the performance with AMD Ryzen will be higher than Intel Core i7?

Thanks!

My first opinion would be to jailbreak it, and stick it on linux/ ubuntu, Suddenly you go from a subpar system to something that works well.

If you're a content creator/ streamer I'd recomend x99, and a 5820k as a budget option over any z170/ z270 offering. Unless you feel you need single core performance.

I'm so tired of reading this wait for Ryzen. Been waiting over 5 years for AMD and I'm waiting for jetpacks.

There will not be much improvement. AMD might bring out unlocked overclocking as they have done with FX. No one can tell you if they are faster. I would wait but only because I already have a desktop; if I did not have a desktop I would have bought in the new years sale. I can't think when the next sale will be, prob around the start of the school year which will be near to the Ryzen release date

Waiting for AMD Ryzen is only reasonable when you are buying components in same time when it's released for public. If you want to buy components now, I would go for it.

You don't need to 'jailbreak' a MacBook to install Linux on it.

@LiquidSpikes- if you're looking for an immediate solution, run your games on Windows through BootCamp. Performance will likely double than when using Mac ports, and you'll have access to a larger library of games.

At any rate, here's my recommendation for a $1950 PC build that includes a monitor, peripherals, and Windows. Don't worry about the Core i7 5820k being an older chip; it performs almost entirely on par with the Core i7 6800k. Ryzen is still a few months off.
