Ok, I have an old laptop that's running really slow and I want to replace the hdd in it with an ssd. This normally would a simple task, just replace the ssd and hdd backup stuff and then use a usb to install windows. Unfortunately, the USB ports on my laptop are broken... so I was wondering if it's possible for me to plug a SSD into my PC, install windows on it (while having it not affect my PC) then remove it and put it into the laptop.

You probably can.

Sig under construction.

I've done this before on a laptop but make sure you include all of the drivers on the hard drive before you move it over since your USB ports don't work.

I don't see why not, all a storage device is to store well.. Information, no other component holds information when the pc is off. So the storage devices is the only thing the pc boots off of. Thus yes, it's entirely possible

How would I do it though? Would I have to get rid of all the storage on my PC then install windows or could I do it while still running my PC?

Disconnect your hard drive from your PC, then hook up the laptop drive to your PC, and then install the OS like you were installing it on the PC. Move the hard drive back to the laptop once it's installed and reconnect your hard drive in your PC.

I'd just remove your storage devices from your PC, then install your laptop's storage device and plug in a bootable drive and install windows from there.
