Linux

How should I get started in it, some questions:

How can I go about setting up a tri/dual boot (May want to add mac later on)

What is a good distro?

Any tutorials or is everything self-explanatory?

How do I make a bootable flash drive? (Can plug in and use Linux not some iso thing)

And anything else you guys want me to know?

  • You can use this  to create a bootable flash drive.

Let me first say I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to Linux so keep that in mind when you read my suggestions.

To start you can try Ubuntu, Mint, PCLinuxOS, etc.  You may want to set up a VM to test them out.

You can look Here to check out different distros and view a description.

Also, what hardware will you putting this on?  You may want to go with lighter distros if it is an old machine.

I'd try Ubuntu and Debian in a VM first. You can download the image and insert it directly into the vm. If you like it, put it on a partition or a seperate drive in your computer.

If you want to do mac (which I can only recommend), you will definitly need one seperate drive on which you only run mac. Mac on the same drive with windows and / or linux is very very complicated to set up.

I can recommend tonymacx86 as there is a ton of great and easy guides.

But for mac your hardware matters very much.
For linux, installing is simple. Just try with vbox whether you like it or not.

Ubuntu is probably the most user friendly... good place to start. I'm a Redhat guy myself so maybe give CentOS a go, (Part of the redhat family)

start with a virtual machine

https://www.virtualbox.org/

What is a good distro?

insanely dependent question, but just start with latest ubuntu.

Any tutorials or is everything self-explanatory?

i dont mean this in a rude way but google will solve 99% of any q's/probs you have

How do I make a bootable flash drive? (Can plug in and use Linux not some iso thing)

And anything else you guys want me to know?

its not windows, you can spend lots of time to get it working like windows, but this will ultimatly lead to a sub par linux experience

you will have to learn some things

forget somethings

take your time

use google

ask politely for help on forums

IRC chat rooms

dont be afraid of the terminal- its just a ordinary program without buttons or pictures [you dont have to use it but its shortcut city if you can]

There were some applets that did a similar thing but disappeared or I can't find them, this should fit my needs very well.

the best way to start is to try it. the best distribution is the one that caters to your needs,

but as a beginner try ubuntu or debian, they are the most used and easy to configure and install stuff on.

u can make a bootable usb with unetbootin and try the liveusb without installing.

watch out not to wipe your entire data when you install, because linux uses a different partition than windows.

the dual boot will done by grub2 when you install linux on a computer with windows on it.

the best advice is to mess around with it even if you brake it, and try reading on what interests you on different wikis.

also join the forum of the distribution that you installed and ask questions there.

be careful even in linux there are snobs that don't like to help newbies, don't be discouraged by the haters.

good luck!
