I have recently installed my new factory oc MSI ARMOR rx 480 I was wondering what overclocks people have got on vram and core clock. So far i have 1370 mhz core clock and 1990 mhz on vram. Stress testing it seems to be stable but when i start games it crashes not long after starting.

then you are not stable . Try adding power and/or voltage

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

I think its the vram crashing it does overvolting help that.

vram isn't usually a problem . But try overclocking the core first , THEN overclocking the memory . If you do both at the same time , you won't know what is causing issues

that is what I did but the stress test survived them both I didn't open any games until after the benchmark so I am not sure what crashed it.

do it again with games. What test did you use ? Stuff like firestrike , heaven or valley are fairly Representative of a game load

I used furmark for stress test but afterwards benchmarked with heaven and it survived both

install afterburner and activate the screen overlay, to show wattage, gpu volts, usage, memory usage and speed. this way you can see better what is going on.

for me for example 2250 memory would work on heaven and firestrike but would crash on games because while loading at lower frequency on the core the memory would jump up to 2250 for a sec and that would cause a crash ( lower clocks on core have tighter timings which limit max memory frequency)

thanks I will have to look again  at afterburner again that could be what caused i I wasn't paying attention when it crashed because I thought it was stable

Don't use furmark to stress test, it makes the gpu use way too much power and it will run into the power limit, never reaching the highest boost clocks. Unigine Heaven or Valley would be much better.

ok the heaven benchmark seemed to work fine but I didn't do a full stress test with it.

Check the game log. If it was a hard crash, check afterburner's log. Make sure the boost clock is disabled too.

I found this, it might be the VRM. It is entirely possible furmark damaged your gpu. You might be able to send it in to MSI but test it at the speed it came with first by uninstalling afterburner. restart after uninstalling and run the game that crashed.

I don't think so since furmark does not have access to the GPU at OS or driver level to control voltages. I never let the card pass 80 degrees when running.

I think It could be installing AMD crimson control panel since I didn't crash until after installing that

Look through crimson panel for things like boost clock and power saving features. Boost clock is going to screw with the stability of your overclock and power saving features might be stopping the GPU from getting the voltage it needs.
