BIOS Update

Go to solution Solved by Mira Yurizaki,

It's always a good idea to update BIOS within BIOS itself. Do not update it while in Windows when anything can happen.

If the BIOS update mechanism is smart, it'll copy the BIOS from your flash drive and do a verification of its integrity into RAM before doing its thing.

Also I believe most motherboards by 2010 or so have had fallbacks where if you fail a BIOS update, it doesn't actually brick the motherboard. It uses a backup BIOS to recover. Especially with Gigabyte since they were proudly touting "dual BIOS" for a while.

Hello,

I want to update my BIOS , because my BIOS does not work well with my GPU. People told me that there is a risk of complete failure leading to a broken Motherboard. So I don't want to make a mistake. I google how to do this properly and I want to make sure I understood everything correctly .

My Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-H61M-DS2H rev2.1 . I verified the model number and rev physically on my board and verified the layout and how it looks online + with CPU-Z : Report http://prntscr.com/drfygb

I don't know which method to use , @Bios or with Qflash option and a flash drive. Which is safer ? Also my flash drives are not some good brand like Kingston.

This page : http://www.gigabyte.us/MicroSite/121/tech_a_bios.htm

Tells that I should turn of anti-virus. Can I trust this page . is it legit.

It says to turn some kind of hyperthreding . How do I do this? Where to find it in BIOS , how is it called there?

I download F6 from this site:

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4194#

I got this Application .exe file which looks like a 7zip. I don't want to run it and test what happens . http://prntscr.com/drg09o

Where should I download @BIOS from?

Any other things I should know before doing this /

The part you found about turning off virus protection is legitimate. The site itself is from Gigabyte.

It's fine. Even just turning off antivirus doesn't magically infect you with thousands of viruses, you know, so if that's what you are worried about, you are fine.

Ok , so I will not use @Bios then. I will install it with Qflash and a flashdrive. Should I use FAT32 , and should I format the USB stick before inserting. Which USB slot should I choose ? I don't have USB 3.0. So only USB 2.0

Thank you !

Use FAT32 and put the BIOS file in the root (so if your flash drive is E:\, leave it in E:\). And I don't think it matters what USB port you use as long as it's native to the chipset, so the safest bet is one of the USB 2.0 ports.

One more thing I need to know ,

When I downloaded the BIOS update file , I got this .exe file which self-extracting 7zip file (sort of) when I ran it , it extracted itself to a folder. Which inside contained multiple files including a setup file.

More in pictures:

1. http://prntscr.com/drgxdv

2. http://prntscr.com/drgyyk

Which one do I copy into the root of flash drive.

a. The raw downloaded file (.exe file)

b. The extracted folder

c. The contents of the extracted folder

Thank you so much for these answers !

That looks like the setup utility, not the actual BIOS. http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4194#dl

If that doesn't take you straight to the BIOS download page:

You can jump from your current version to the latest.

Okay , thank you . Sorry for the inconvenience , but which one do I put in the the USB?

http://prntscr.com/drhd23

a. the extracted content (from the downloaded file , because it's an 7zip autoextract file)

b. the downloade file

Oh and should I download the beta version , is it safe?

Sorry , for so many questions , I just don't want to fail and brick my MOBO :(

Thank you !

It may not be as stable or may have bugs.

The last time I used a beta BIOS, it didn't like newer graphics cards. I actually had to roll it back to a previous version.

Ok , so I'll go with the beta version because I have an issue with "high end GPU"

So YOLO

Wish me luck.

Very thanks to M. Yurizaki for huge support.
