Buying a server....Maybe?

Hello,

 

    I might be buying a server from someone for 175$ and I want a second opinion on if it's worth it.

 

Specs:

 

Xeon E5-2640 6 core cpu (2)

24GB ECC Buffered 1333mhz RAM

4 1TB WD SAS Drives

SuperMicro Tower case 

SuperMicro Motherboard (form factor unknown)

 

Any tips would be great thanks!

what do you need a server for?

I don't have a real need for it, I was wondering if I could make it into a home build. Maybe throw a GPU in there and have just some serious horse power if I ever decide to do something that would require horsepower. But also wouldnt mind gaming on it if possible. Just curious if the price is good.

It wouldn't have the kind of horsepower for gaming, as it is a Xeon server. It would be okay. I would buy it just to salvage the ram from it or maybe use as a browser PC.

Would you be selling the ram or what would you do with it?

I would save it for use on any other machine I may encounter that can use DDR3. I have an old FX-4300 build that I may give to a friend soon, and they would enjoy having more RAM. It wouldn't sell for much.

Just make sure your friends computer can take ECC buffered RAM. It probs cant.

The server is a nice thing for a lab but not something you want to use for gaming or as a desktop.

My FX-4300 build can take ECC memory. I've used some before.

That's a very good price for those pecs, but the thing is... What are you going to use it for? Chances are it is very noisy so it won't be something you want to be in the same room as while it's on.

Don't listen to the haters. Servers are cool. If you want one just for the hell of it, go right ahead. I would buy that server myself for that price. Have fun.

Holy crap that is a great deal, just buy it, have some fun with it and sell it on for a profit. You can sell the motherboard alone for more then 175 dollars.
