On the side.

No, I mean (from what I remember) there needs to be something metal, so the the mod mic is able be placed on the head phones.

No, I think it can mount to multiple types of surfaces. Also aren't the sides metal? The mod mic need a clean surface.

Only a thin piece around the BOSE logo. There's a little mesh part which I'm assuming is for heat has the thin piece stripe of metal going around the top and bottom, that might be a good mounting point for the mod mic.
