Hey everyone,

I have recently been looking into adapting my desktop gaming PC into a gaming PC Plex server combo. In my system currently I have a 500GB SSD which has served me well with the few games I have installed but now that I am starting to rip my music and films onto my PC I need to expand my storage capacity. I have been looking at Western Digital's mechanical hard drive options and can't really decide what to go for or whether I am better off looking at other manufacturers which will provide a similar product at a lower price.

Obviously as it's only going to be music and films I don't need a performance hard drive (Black drive) but I am not sure whether to get two 1TB Blue drives and run them in RAID 1 or buy a 2TB Red drive which supposedly has better reliability. Obviously having a like for like back up of your data in RAID 1 is always preferable but WD claims that Red is much better suited for server like configuration and would provide me with twice the storage.  I know ideally two Red drives in RAID 1 would be best but spending less that £100 is highly preferable.

Should I get two 1TB Blue drives and run them in RAID 1, or get one 2TB Red drive or go for a completely different manufacturer altogether?

Thanks in advance,

Matt
