5.1 makes microphone not work??

Ok, I have a Asus B150M-A motherboard and a pair of sennheiser hd 451's with a tonor condenser tn12326 microphone. I always plug my headphones into the front I/O of my case so that they are able to reach further and my microphone is using the rear I/O so the cable is hidden. I was changing around some audio settings and my headphones are able to use 5.1 instead of Quadrophonic so I enabled that but when I did it made it so that my mic stopped working... I plugged the microphone into the front I/O panel and it started working again :\ I'm wondering if anyone has similar issues or would know how to solve it so that I can use 5.1 with my headphone in the front I/O and mic in the back I/O.
