How to downclock a cpu?

Do I have to touch things like voltage when downclocking a 6600k or can I just lower the multiplier?

Thanks for your help :)

You can just lower the multiplier, but I believe you can only lower it so far.

bought new cpu and mobo but the mounting system for lga 1151 of my old cooler was missing so I have to use an old stock heatsink until I have the new mounting system. But with the intel stock cooler the cpu goes up to 100°C easily when having some load on it...

You have to lower the voltage if you want lower temps.

My i7 6700 on stock cooler does 74Cº max under load, how is yours going all the way up to the 100Cº? did you use thermal paste correctly and is it correctly mounted? another not so fancy way to increase lower temps ghetto like is lay your tower down on sideways remove side panel and lay down a normal good fan on top of it on maximum speed, used to do it with an old core 2 duo when i lived in a much hotter place and it did get lower temps than leaving the case all closed.

The i7 6700 has 65W tdp, while the i5 6600k has 91W, so I guess the stock cooler is just not made for a cpu like that... The stock cooler didn't even come with the 6600k, I had it laying around and just threw it on.

The intel ark says that both have 91 watts tdp
