4k or 1440p

Hiyas i currently play on a asus rog laptop and looking to get a desktop with a nvidia gtx 1080 in it. From what i can tell looks like not quite ready for a 4k monitor. Was wandering if this community thinks to get a 4k monitor for gaming or go for a 1440p ultrawide. And if i would get a 4k monitor would it be a problem to run games at a lower res on it to have the better fps. Thank you for any replies.

 

Edit - also open to any other suggestions. Been a long time since i gamed on desktop.

When playing a game with constantly moving textures and such, the difference between 1440p and 4k becomes very hard to distinguish.

 

Bare in mind, both of my monitors were 27 inches. so If you are looking into some crazy larger display your experience may differ.

 

My last piece of advice is since you are in the high-resolution range start focusing on FPS. 1440p 144hz is incredibly more pleasurable to play on than 4K 60hz. I promise the strain of playing at 60fps was much worse than having to "stoop down" to 1440p.

 

And as for "can my graphics card handle it", you have a 1080, the answer will always be yes haha. I have been able to hit both 4k 60fps and 1440p 144hz with my 1070 in Doom, Grand Theft Auto and Planet Coaster.
