So i put in a hard drive from another computer in my pc and its working and i can install things on it, but everything that was on it before i installed it doesnt actually show up as being on the computer but the files for it are there

reinstall what?

The person means that if you want the programs to show up on your list of things installed, you have to reinstall them. Simply existing on a hard drive and being able to run them does not make them "install"

On that note, most applications don't really care if they're installed or not. If the executable is there and all of the files exist, it can run.

Reading the OP twice I think he meant his files not showing up not his programs.

Then it installed somewhere else.

Are you having trouble accessing the files?

I meant it's installing somewhere else on the hard drive. Probably.

You're going to have to write down every step you do, down to the specific partition/drive letter this is happening on, because what you're saying is making little sense at this point to me.

Ok, Here is an example. Lets just say steam is on the hard drive right? (you can see it in the files) and the hard have 300gb free, ok? But you cant actually open or use steam until you re download it. Ok, after you have re downloaded steam, now there is only 298gb free even though in the files it said it was already there and every time  you install something is already on the hard drive adds on to it and you get less and less gb free

The only way for that to happen is if you're installing the program somewhere on the hard drive in a different directory, which is something you usually have to deliberately do. And the only way for you not to "use Steam" or anything else is if you don't have the file permissions set to do so, which is something you can override. So either you're reinstalling it to another directory on the hard drive or you don't have permission to access to your files.

Or your hard drive is dying and it's constantly marking stuff as bad even though the file system says it's there.

Or your system is somehow hard linking everything and making the file space enumeration all screwed up.

Either way, something is horribly wrong with either your system configuration, your hard drive, or you're doing something deliberately and not knowing what the consequences are.
