AMD am3 cpu recommendation

My friend would like to buy GTA V but the only problem is that it runs like a slideshow on his rig and i've managed to convince him to get a better cpu.

Specs:

CPU: AMD athlon II x2 255

Motherboard: Asus M4A78LT-M LE

Ram: 2x2Gb 1333mhz stick, 6 Gb if necessary because i have a spare 4 gb one.

GPU: Nvidia gt 640 2gb

OS: win 10 pro 64 bit

Resolution is somewhere around 720p, i don't know exactly.

Since i don't have a lot of knowledge in amd cpu's, i'd like to ask for your help about a cheap AM3 socket cpu that can run gta v above 30 fps.

(does not matter if it is a used one).

Thanks in advance.

CPU: Intel Core I5 4690K || GPU: Gigabyte GTX 960 4GB Windforce 2 OC || RAM: 8GB Hyper X furry 1600Mhz || Case: Corsair Carbide Spec-01 || PSU: EVGA 600W (100-W1-0600-K2) || Displays: Asus VC239 1080p ips 23",  Acer x193w 1440x900 19,5" || Keyboard: Bloody B120 || Mouse: Bloody V8M

GT640 is extremely weak and will not run GTA 5 at ''better than slideshow'' anyways...even with a proper CPU.

FX 8350 is slightly better but still slow.

Though that graphics card is extremely underpowered too.

He'd need a whole new PC, both CPU on a new platform, and at the very least a mildly powerful graphics card.

Get all the ram you can in that machine, maybe a fx 6000 series if your board supports it, then you will probably need to upgrade your gpu. Something like the 4gb R9 380 for $80-90 on ebay will work for 1080p.

cpu is underpowered gpu is underpowered and not enough ram (even the 6gb) to play with any good fps

a gt 640 should run it ok for his preference, i had one in my old system too, and it ran gta v good in 900p with a Pentium cpu.

there is no need for a beast pc, he just wants to play it.

convincing him to get a new pc is impossible.

he does not care about fps much. only need is that it's 30 or above.

computers to him is like quantum physics to me.

gpu should be enough to run in 720p, i did with my old system in 900p on medium and high with 4gb ram gt640 Pentium g3420. not 60 fps but it was ok for me at that time.

Nobody is saying that he should buy a beast PC, just a new one, cause his current one is utterly bad.

He's not playing the game on his current PC. Period.

that is true, but there is no way that he will get a new one, that is why upgrading the cpu could help a little.

Not true, i used to have GTX 650 1GB and it handled GTA V on mixed Normal/High/Very High settings pretty well with 35 - 45 fps and rare dips below 30, i strongly believe that GT 640 could do fine on all Normal settings paired with better CPU.

GTX 650 is waaay better than GT 640, so you don't really make a good point

While i completely agree that the 650 is way better then the 640, GTA V wont be a slideshow with an 640 either

(unless the CPU is a potato)
