Hey everyone! I need some suggestions and advice on purchasing a new monitor. I'm gonna try and keep this concise so you know what my use case/specs/price range is and what I'm currently thinking about buying.

Use case:

  • Gaming (currently playing Witcher 3, MGS5, and getting back into DOTA.)
  • Some movie watching (mostly streaming)
  • School work (MATLAB and orCAD)

Specs:

  • GTX 1070
  • i7 3770

Price range:

  • I really wanna keep it at MOST $400 USD, but if there is something at ~$450 then I might consider it as well.

Requirements and what I'm looking at currently:

  • Only real requirement is that the resolution has to be over 1920 x 1800. I just got a 1070 and I think I can start pushing more pixels, but I am not too interested in 4K as of now. 2.5K sounds a lot better to me. I am currently using a 32" 1080p TV as a monitor and I am certain anything will be an upgrade.
  • I am currently looking at...
    • the LG 29UM68-P (29" ultrawide LTT did a video on a year or two ago.)
    • the ASUS MX27AQ (I really like the slim bezels on this monitor and that it is a 2.5K display.

Between those two, the LG is attracting me because it is $300 and UW compared to the ASUS at $400. But I like the ASUS a lot more in terms of pure pixles. Any suggestions on other monitors I should be looking at or reasons to get either of the two mentioned? Thank you!

Eh kinda of a tricky thing to pick between. I wouldn't go with that 29" monitor if you have a choice, there are some that are 75hz, I'd probably aim more towards one of those.

The 27" would give you more vertical space. The 29" would give you more horizontal space.

Thanks for the reply. I also think that the 27" is a better idea and unless someone else is gonna give me another idea I'm gonna buy that :)
