I have a 24" LG 1080 panel and out of curiosity flipped it into portrait. Wow, it's amazing how much better with this orientation getting a full display of vertical information is vs. the horizontal orientation. The question that I'd like to throw out there, on most websites the vertical space is perfect, the horizontal of the 1080 pixel side it's almost a bit too short and a horizontal scroll bar pops in the browser, what's the best monitor size / resolution for portrait orientation?

1920 × 1200 is a bit better. A lot of content is designed to fit within 1280 horizontal pixels for legacy support on 1280 × 1024 monitors, which was a very common resolution on older monitors.
