I suspect you've got either non-functional, or very bad QOS (Quality of service settings) on your router, A new device connecting, or doing anything might be getting the bulk of your bandwidth instead of your game which the router clearly thinks is not important enough.

 

Here is an article that goes into more depth than I'm willing to at them moment.

What you will need to do once you understand it is go to the website for your router and determine exactly how to enable (or adjust) QOS settings.

Sorry I deleted this thread only because I think I've narrowed it down to my router just being plain crap. It's the DLINK DIR-615 revision C. I don't even think I can change QOS settings on this router. Any suggestions?

Try enabling traffic shaping. you might be stuck with d-links settings but it should be better than what you have now.
