Hey guys I just recently for my Watercooling setup and I'm trying to overclock my FX 8300 chip to 4.0ghz at 1.35v. but for some reason it underclocks to 2.9ghz?? even at 30 .C, I don't get what I'm doing wrong here. I'd just like to get a decent overclock going for gaming.

My specs are:

Asrock 970m pro3

AMD FX 8300

GTX 1050 ti sc

DDR3 1600mhz ram

500w titanium rated psu

There is your problem that chip set was never meant to have suck a high watt CPU. When it under-clocks like that it means something is wrong and it is throttling to save it's self. I noticed this on my 8350 when going for 5GZ 1.5V the VRM's were getting so hot that it would periodically drop to 1.5 GHz.

I have a very beefy heat-sink on my VRMs and I still have issues with them over heating.

It has nothing to do with the chipset, the main difference between 970 and 990fx chipset is the higher PCI lane on the 990, but it does not affect clock speeds and oc other then giving you more headroom with the HT link speed 2600 vs 2400, but even then it has more to do with optimizing GPU and Ram transfer speeds then anything else. Also chipset and vrms have nothing to do with each other.

With that out of the way @Thatguywiththetoasterpc unfortunately your problem is indeed the VRMs, your board has a a weak 4+1 phase count, not something you would use an FX 83XX CPU, let alone overclock it. With that processor up to 4 GHz an Asus m5a97 r2.0 (not the le one) is the cheapest option I think. Or MSI 970 gaming which offers a bit more headroom with its 6+2 power phase design.

So i was mostly right other than the chipset part lol

My VRMs where hot like 120c and over hot, even at 1.37v for 4.5Ghz they are around 116c but that meant it didn't throttle. I not running 4.0 1.3v (stock is 1.375) as i am running linux and have no good way to monitor them so best not to let them get hot at all. lol

Lol. I had 3 stock AMD cooler fans over my VRM's and North Bridge for a while

Damn I just got this mobo aswell, I cant get past 1.33v before it auto downclocks.
