How do you set up a old router to be a wifi access point.

I have two old routers which I would like to be set up as wifi access points so there is a better wifi connection in my house upstairs, the problem is I have no god damn clue on how to do this, any hints, tips, advice and guidance on doing so, any give will go a long way. again the reason I'm using these routers is we already own them and I'm not willing/too skint to buy any special wifi access points, the router also may be used sort of like a switch to pass through data due to it having 4 1GB Ethernet connections.

what kind of router is it? do you want to set it up as a wifi repeater or as an accespoint that connects with a lan cable to the main infrastructure?

Just plug the lan in your house the the lan on the router. Don't use the wan port on the router.

 

Then you can access the web setttings and change what ever you want.

how do I find the IP address to connect to it to configure, that's the biggest problem I'm having, as the only IP address I can think of that it could be is 192.168.1.1, which it obviously isn't as that takes to the main router of the house

If you connect the 2nd router to your LAN your main router will see it as it should broadcast. Log into your router and look for connected devices (you might need to take a note of the MAC address of the 2nd router), it should appear and then you'll be able to assign it a static IP address.

The default IP address for the BT Home Hub 5 is 192.168.1.254

You'll want to disable the DHCP server on the Home Hub 5. Have a look around the settings for an Access Point mode. Some routers have one.

I have disabled DHCP, I believe will I need to connect through the hub through the WAN port or a normal Ethernet port for the wifi to configure?
