Elysium Project

Not really.  I played that 11 years ago, and quite frankly I found the replay value not very high...

Fair enough,

I definitely think I am hunting for the nostalgia of it. I am pretty sure it will not fit into the modernity of games that I have grown accustom to. But, I am still compelled to prove this to myself.

Nostalgia is only that...nostalgia.

I still remember my first time walking through the gates of Ironforge, and in fact would probably call it the most memorable moment in gaming I've ever had.  Overall though, I'd have to put it below everything else but Cata and WoD...and WoD had better raiding...but just didn't have anything else...Vanilla was epic, but very poorly designed, and in fact you could argue a lot of it wasn't designed, but just thrown together to let the players sort out.  "Rotations" didn't exist (in the developer's mindset), and it wasn't even until AQ that bosses really were created with a strategy...and even then it's debatable.

It shouldn't have been possible to do every quest in a zone, then still be too low level to get the breadcrumb to the next.  Even then most of the difficulty came from lack of information (thottbot wasn't usually that helpful).

It was definately epic, but more than anything else (and possibly contributing to the epicness) it was a huge timesink.  A lot of people confuse timesink with difficulty, and while there does need to be some investment, vanilla was far to artificial in how things were drawn out...and that's just not something I have as much time for anymore.

Now, I will say if you didn't play vanilla, it's worth checking out.  While the game has (barring the aforementioned xpacks) consistently gotten better as a whole, there are a lot of cool things they've removed.  Hunter pet training and tracking down skills was a lot of fun.  I was really sad to see lock/palli mount quests go, as with a lot of class quests.  The new class campaigns are ok (I especially liked the rogue), but they aren't the same.

I'll probably never have another gaming moment like walking through the gates Ironforge, and doing it again won't bring back that feeling.  But my first time exiting Vault 111 was fun...
