I was looking to see if I could find a motherboard that would be able to support the USB 3.0 Jacks on the front of my case. Most of the motherboards have USB 3.1 support. I was wondering if I would be able to use the MSI z-170a Krait Gaming board with my case the: Corsair Crystal 460x RGB. Thanks!

I don't see a reason why it would not support the 3.0 case ports. It should be completely fine.

I did read somewhere that only certain ports are compatible with different types depending on which type it is i.e: Type a or Gen 1  Which ones would be unable to work together?

Usb 3.1 can be in any form, although I doubt that you are getting 3.1 on the front panel headers itself. It's probably a port or two on the back of the motherboard.
