Hi! My name is Marcus and I come from Sweden.

My first post in this forum and i hope the topic aren't miss placed!

I recently build my first water cooled PC, everything went well and everything worked fine except one graphic card wasn't detected by the computer.
When I drained the loop and put the non detected card in my GF's PC it did work just fine.
I swapped the PCIe lanes but GPU 1 still was the working card just in a PCIe slot 3 instead of 1. After many hours of tinkering I removed both backplanes and suddenly it worked.
Does anyone  had the same problem? What can I be doing wrong? I can see the card flex a bit when I tighten the 4 screws around the GPU (around 2mm of flex). Is that not normal? Have measured the screws and mounted the blocks and backplates according to EKWB, but still I'm doing something wrong because it just don't work.

When i mount the stock coolers both cards work flawless.

My specs are:

i7 6850k
Asus rampage v ED10
Asus strix 1080 x2 in SLI
EKWB waterblocks and backplates for GTX 1080 strix
Corsair ax1200i
32Gb Corsair Domiiinator platinum 8x4Gb

Samsung SSD PRO 500Gb x2

Samsung SSD EVO 250Gb

Sorry for bad English, doing my best.

Yes they are, They work in SLI as long as I don't mount the backplates.

I have triple checked the back plates and it's the right ones I have.

You think maybe the backplates are causing a problem with the SLi bridge/bridge connectors?

That was my first thought, but the PC doesn't even find the second card in the PCIe slot it's mounted in whit or whit out the SLI bridge.

Is it possible that the back plate is short circuit some studs on the backside of the card? Can't see how tho, I have never heard of that anyhow?

If the problem only happens with the backplate on and only happens to one of the cards, it seems like a short or something is at fault. I've never heard of it happening, but I've never used EK's backplates and I think they are fully metallic. Can you think of a way to keep the backplate higher off the back of the card? Maybe some washers or something that keep the plate higher aren't doing their job.

Humm, i will try to make some plastic washers to lift the backplate ~1mm. Thx for the tip! will come back to tell you if it worked.

Do the back-plates allow the cards to be fully seated into the slot?

  • 3 months later...

Sry for the late replay, but i finally got it working.. in some sense anyway. I just swallowed my pride and did not tighten the screws as hard as i wanted, now the system recognize both cards but it feels kind of "iffy"
