RX480 Display Driver Stopped Working ?

Hi !

I made a topic few weeks ago about buying which RX480 to buy and i ended up with Sapphire Nitro+ 8G version. Box came yesterday i uninstalled the old nvidia drivers and removed the card from device manager. I unplugged the card from case and plugged the new one without a problem. All 8pins are in too.

Later installed the drivers without problem again, installed sapphire software(not that i did OC , i wanted to see temp for graphics card). Entered some games to try and enjoy my cards (Overwatch and American Truck Sim.) No problem at all doing 150-250 fps in OW at epic settings. Played 1-2 games then passed to American Truck Sim for a 30 minutes drive no problem at all there too.

Until i went to sleep... Seriously... I slept about 3 hours and i always let the computer run at idle while im sleeping for a short time. I woke up and sit down at my computer, opened Overwatch again entered the game .. and bam ! . Game froze, it went black and came and went again and came,  but i can hear the footsteps that i can move or i can still play the game but its black screen screen. And then Windows 10 notification popped up and said that the display driver has stopped responding and recovered (this might be not the EXACT sentence, i was so angry that i cant even remember it correctly..) I could alt+tab use windows button, mouse on start menu etc but couldnt get out of the game so i had to restart from start menu. Then i entered the American Truck Sim. after 5 or 10 mins the error happened again.

I uninstalled the graphics card and driver, restarted the pc and installed the driver again. Did let the PC rest for overnight and here i am sitting with same error again. I tried TdrDelay registry trick to set 8 but it did not work at all.

I went straight crazy at house screaming at things ,like really AMD ? After all this time i trusted you again and you come at me with driver problems again ? Please guys i am depending on your help, any way to fix this problem ? If its hardware problem or cant fix it all i need to return it to Amazon so i can get my money back at least. Thanks again boys...

My PC Specs:

Intel i7 6700k Stock

ASUS Z170-P

Kingston 8G One Stick

Corsair 700W (Was rocking ASUS Gtx560ti 448 cores with this baby, you know how much power they use lol)

WD Blue 1TB

Samsung HD103SJ 1TB

Windows 10

PS: I will be all day at forum , so if any information needed for this problem just let me now ..

Bad AMD driver? Don't think so. I have an RX480 in my system, with several versions of drivers. Haven't had any driver related issue for the past four months.

Possibility

1, faulty card. Please return it to the seller.

2. Windows update fucks up again. Windows 10 has become a monster with untested update. It fucked up my system once after an update(black screen). Fucked up my friend's laptop(unstable Wifi connection).

Well how can i know its a faulty card or if its windows. Im looking from more positive side actually saying that it might be Windows because it was working at first time? :(

Unless you 've a spare AMD card to test. Hard to tell whether the card faulty or not. Amazon has good return policy. I'd return it and get a new one instead. Getting two faulty cards in a row is very unlikely.

Well i dont .. I dont actually want to return it unless its really the cards fault not my computer. After returning and getting another one of these and having the same issue ? Possible if its caused by my side..

You can also try older version of the driver. Just to rule out the driver isn't the cause of problem.

Or roll back the Windows update to see if it fixes your problem.

Well look what i found, when i try to update it couldnt even update. I did stop windows update from services back when i did format. I opened it again and it says Waiting for Download and stuck there still. Windows update might be the problem ?

Well i never did , but i can. Anything you want me to do after uninstalling that ?

Do you also have the newest Crimson Relive installed? It's possible the Sapphire Trixx doesn't co-exist well with the new Crimson Relive.

Also use DDU when you uninstall.

Well blizzard said when i contacted them choose only graphics driver so i did. 16.12.1 i downloaded and installed. But when i run the install for driver again it shows 16.50.2001 on left Partially Installed and 16.50.2001 Local Driver on right side. What the hell 0.0

Not sure exactly what goes wrong.

Do you download the driver directly from AMD site? Seems software related rather than a faulty graphics card. Maybe un-install everything. Do a DDU and Ccleaner. And re-install the driver again. Fingers cross it will sort itself out.

Yep directly from the AMD site itself. Used DDU multiple times to reinstall but didnt work. Downloading a Windows iso currently , gonna do a clear Windows install. I tried everything beside clean install and windows updates(i cant get windows to update anything...) Gonna let you know after what happens

Is this true boys ? Found this sentence on AMD forums and got me real bad. Mine is 8gigs and can this cause this problem ? I ve never heard about this.

" the problem you have is the lack of enough system RAM for a 8GB video card you should install 16GB of memory or better 32GB "

I really doubt that. It was working and then stopped working. If that were the problem, it shouldn't have worked in the 1st place.

And one more thing guys. Do you recommend installing 16.11.5 driver instead of 16.12.1 after format ? I heard that 16.12.1 was still new and had some bugs.

I read some people have issues with 16.12.1. Maybe indeed a good idea to start with older driver first. At least you have a working PC. If everything works out fine, then switch to the newest driver.

Well well .. It did not work :D Its not saying that "your rendering device has been lost! application closing! ". I installed the windows update drivers nothing else this time. I will try to install 16.11.5 and removing the windows update one this time. And contacted the Sapphire lets see what they have to say

+ More update. I removed the card, plugged back in. Changed the power cable just to be sure and it lasted about 5-10 minutes in game :o And then same crash, and when it crashed in game settings show that the card was 61 degrees. So i gueess when fan starts to turn card goes wild ?

+One more update. Its not about temp. This time crashed in 2 minutes and it was 34 degrees celcius.

Try this, uninstall drivers, the run DDU in safe mode, when you have rebooted run driver sweeper 3.2.0 (version is important). Then goto program files and program files x86, delete all amd/ati folders. reboot and then install latest AMD drivers...

If this doesn't work it sounds like a hardware fault.

You can also try installing msi afterburner to monitor temps and voltage.... if you have a spare HDD, you could do a fresh install of windows to test and see if its not your windows install thats messed up....

Note: make sure you remove the physx driver and just install the legacy one off nvidia's site, this has been known to mess up AMD cards.

Thanks for your advice but im too tired .. I tried everyting(almost) even wiped out installed fresh windows, after that i lost my hopes.

Talking with blizzard for 2 days now and they said this is everything we got, there is no more step for software that we can help you they said. So i guess this is a hardware fault now.

I called amazon and got some information about returning. Tomorrow morning i will start returning procedures, shipping back to them etc. I will try to get a replacement one rather than refund. Thanks everybody for trying to help me fix this problem . If i got the 2nd one with same problem as well, im gonna be mad :D

  • 11 months later...

Hey guys. I apologize for commenting on this and I know it is very old, but was this problem resolved with a new card?  I'm having the exact same problem and have tried everything other than a fresh windows install. Lyetnel if you could respond it would be GREATLY appreciated.
