Headset Mic not working

Windows 10 this is also my first time using a mic on this computer, it was built about a month ago

right click on the speaker icon in the bottom left, click recording devices. Right click on the mic, click set as default device.

I had an issue with discord where discord defaulted to push to talk which caused my mic not to work initially, so check that.

In the bottom right you'll find what looks like a speaker. Right click it. A menu will pop up right where you right click.
Select Recording devices.

Select the microphone you want to use, and click set default in the Recording tab.

Im assuming my mic isn't detected because it doesnt show my mic and I cant click Set default

Ok. How are you connecting your mic? is it just a headset? what kind of interface is on the headset (usb, 3.5mm, etc)

It's a turtle Beach Xbox 1 headset my friend gave me, I also tried with my earbuds that have a mic built in and they wouldnt work either. Im pluging the thing into the 3.5 jacks on the front. One of the jack has a mic on it the other has a pair of headphones but neither work

I think i know your problem. There are actually two types of headphone jacks; 3 pole and 4 pole. The 4 pole is for headsets, 3 pins for audio one for mic. the 3 pole only supports audio. You will need to get a splitter to split the 4 pole into two 3 poles.

something like this should work - https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-MUYHSFMM-Headset-Splitter-Adapter/dp/B0058DOWH6

plug one end into audio, one end into microphone, and everything should work fine.

Why should I need a spliter to use a headset? My friends have no problem using earbuds or a headset and I didnt have this problem on my old laptop...

Laptops often times have 4 pole connectors built in. As you said above, there were two connectors; one for mic, one for audio. This is evidence that your device does not have a 4 pole built in, but rather the two 3 poles.

Could there potentially be a 4 pole one on the back of my case? or any possible way to use a mic without the adapter?

Highly unlikely. I dont think ive ever seen a 4 pole on the back. But really, the adapter is $5. If you can't wait for it to ship, you can run to a music store or drugstore, they will probably have it.
