Hi everyone, I am starting a tf2 game server and would like any help I can get.

The server I will be using is an old dell xps 710 which has:

  • Intel Q6600 at 2.4ghz (cant overclock due to dells bad motherboard)
  • 2gb Corsair Ram
  • Nvidia GTX 480 (I have the card spare so its in here)
  • Really hot running OEM 1000w PSU

Its got a simple 160gb laptop drive that I will be using. The questions I have is what about Security? Like stop people using the games port to get access to my Main comp ect..., DDoS,

and any software I might need?

The last question I have is that I will be using my ip for the server, is that bad?

edit: It will be using Windows 7 as I have a spare activation for it.

Thanks, Alfie.

Security

Make sure you have a decent firewall, that blocks all traffic on all ports that aren't in use by your server. Overall, people can't break in to your server through the port the TF2 server is listening on, unless the TF2 server itself has some security issues.

There is nothing you can do in particular against DDoS attacks.

Hosting the server on your home network isn't particularly bad, as long as the server doesn't get too well known. The only reason it is bad for people to know your IP address is because it enables them to attack your computer directly. As long as your aren't some kind of "special person", there is no incentive to attack your PC ;)

Software

The only software you'll need is

  1. An OS that runs the server software
  2. The software that runs a dedicated software

Apart from that, you'll need to configure your firewall to open up the port your server is running on.
