Xbox stereo adapter

I came downstairs to play some xbox and i noticed that the stereo adapter on my controller was stuck on mute and i couldnt hear anything... ive troed updating my controller while the controller was connected to the xbox and the adapter connected to the controller.... but it didnt work... HELP!
