Currently trying to configure my Cisco 2950 24 port switch to work in my home network. I can't seem to be able to actually figure out how to connect it to my Macbook. On the back there is a Console port which is just an ethernet cable, I plug my MacBook into this port and have no idea where to go from here. I know Cisco commands but I don't know how to do this with a MacBook as I have only used Putty on the PC. What software should I use for mac and what do I need to do to be able to type commands? Thank you in advance for the help.

Thats a serial cable that is using a rj45 connector. You need a adapter to use it like this one https://www.amazon.com/CableRack-Rollover-Console-Cable-Cisco/dp/B00GN5OHIW

Or one from the console port to db-d if you have a computer that has a serial port(look for old ones)

Pretty sure the Terminal on MAC's are telnet/SSH enabled so you should just have to open your terminal on it.

Awesome I really appreciate the help. Any suggestions on what software to use since putty wont be available to me?

putty will work just fine, you just have to select serial console, not ssh

Its not a network port.

A lot of jokes come to mind, but I'll resist the urge for now.

I think you can actually do the initial configurations via a web browser if you don't have a console cable.

Here's how: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/switches/catalyst-2950-series-switches/45383-express-setup.html
