Hey guys,

I am contemplating making the move back to linux however, due to me using an AMD GPU and being unable to move to Nvidia due to money issues, I am in a situation where any Linux distribution I install will stop functioning after I have installed it.

I am currently considering using SUSE Studio to package drivers for my GPU with a custom distribution of Opensuse, however I have never had success getting a build from their site to boot.

Does anyone have any ideas on how one could achieve this?

My procrastination is the bane of my existence.

I make games and stuff in my spare time.

Are you installing things on top of openSuse?

How about using integrated graphics and then installing GPU drivers, then rebooting and use the GPU?

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

I could recommend to try something like Fedora25 or Korora25.

They have a newer kernel which should work better with non proprietary AMD gpu drivers.

Or any other (semi) rolling release distro´s that use later kernels then 4.4.x.x LTS.

As far as Open Suse is concerned, there are two main versions, namely Leap and Thumbleweed.

One of the two is LTS the other is Rolling.

I am using mint (based on ubuntu 16.04 LTS) with a 7770. AMD official drivers (and by official I mean the CCC ones) are still stuck on 14 LTS maybe try that?

Normally I would do that, the problem however is that I'm using an AMD APU.

I assume that you're using Mint 18? Were you able to use your GPU out of the box or did it require installing an unnoficial driver?

Ah okay. Yeah, I've been very worried about it not working once it's installed.

I'm gonna download now and attempt to install it.

if it boots from a usb then it will normally work. If you have problems after then its probably some config or something. I have to add iommu=soft to grub cmd in order to get my network working.

took me days to find the right fix lol

Welp the installation went smoothly, the only issue I really had was my WD RE3 driver not being mountable, but the guys on the official IRC channel helped me out with that.
