I'm kinda looking for a screwdriver set. I see Linus getting sponsored for these kinds of products on the WAN show all the time and I wanted some opinions from the forums here.

I'm tired of never being able to find screwdrivers around the house and I only personally own a single flathead that's so old it has a wooden handle and two phillipsheads if you count the one built into my swiss army knife.

I'm thinking of getting one with the modular bits so I can just keep all the bits in a safe place instead of having a drawer full of full sized screwdrivers. Do you think this is a good idea?

Thinking of this one on the front page of the Amazon Search:

The kit that you are looking at is very similar to the "ifixit" Pro Toolkit that Linus gets sponsored by. I actually own the ifixit toolkit, and it's pretty good. The actual driver set (The screw driver and bits) is pretty good, and it comes with a ton of other accessories in a velcro carry case.

The one you're looking at looks pretty solid, and has good Amazon reviews, but I wouldn't be able to give you more specific info then that.

Keep in mind, these kits are great for PC/Electronic repairs, but they're only alright for general house maintenance. They're fine for your basic stuff, but you may encounter screws/bolts that use a head not included in this kit - especially larger Phillips (Cross pattern) or Flathead screws. However, you'll probably be fine. Most "general" things are going to be Phillips #1 or #2, or some Flathead screw.

Another thing to keep in mind is strength and durability - these kits are great, but a full size individual screw driver is likely to be very much stronger and more durable. This means it'll probably last longer, and also, you can torque it with more force without the screw driver breaking.

Okay thanks. I do occasionally use one for PC, but what got me frustrated enough to ask today was that I was changing out some doorknobs and was basically wandering around trying to find a screwdriver.

I'm a fan of at least having a few normal screwdrivers if for no other reason than they fit in tighter place than bit drivers do.

The one he's linked is probably slimmer than most screwdrivers. It also includes a flexible extension piece. You'd have to have a very long regular-style screwdriver to fit into tighter places.

I'm actually considering going with something a little less cheap, but with even more positive reviews.

It's made of some kind steel alloy instead of the other's aluminum which seems to have translated to less brakes in the reviews section. They also have long slender shafts it appears. Not sure if the handle is a good design. I don't want to spend a fortune on a screwdriver, but I want to get something that doesn't break on potentially more than a few electronics screws and this appears to meet that balance, but I'm always open to extra opinions.

Looks decent. I'd check to see what bits it comes with, to make sure it'll cover everything you're likely going to need.

This is my daily driver (pun intended): Kobalt 13-in-1 Double Drive Screwdriver.

I wanted a screwdriver that was ratcheting, had magnetic bits, and can hold the bits within the handle. This screwdiver has all of that, except the bits aren't magnetic enough to hold most screws. For that, I ended up getting a magnetizer to strengthen the magnetism on my bits.

What makes this driver unique is its "double drive" action, meaning you can hold the textured fore-grip and twist the handle in either direction to drive the screw.

I believe Kobalt is Lowes' in-house brand, and of course it's available at Lowes stores (often for a bit cheaper than Amazon).
