Speccing up a new Gaming PC

haztheman92

Budget: £1600 (ish)

Location: UK

Usage: Mostly Gaming, Some light video editing

Monitors: I've picked out a 1920x1080 monitor to run with it. I'll probably also hook it up to a small TV screen for when I'm working or want to have a video running in the background

Peripherals:  I have everything I need

Why I'm Upgrading: My current setup is 5-6 years old and cant cope with these new-fangled games - and it can get pretty noisy too, even under not particularly high loads. I want something that can not only handle newer games but also run fairly quietly when I'm not pushing it

CPU: i5-6600K

Cooler: Corsair H115i

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2133MHz, White Heatspreader

MOBO: Asus Z170 Sabertooth S

GPU: MSI GTX 1070 Sea Hawk

SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 500GB

HDD: Toshiba P300 3TB

PSU: Corsair RM550x
Case: Cooler Master Mastercase Pro 5

I'm planning to OC the processor, hence I've gone for (hopefully) a cooler that will cope with the extra heat. I've specified the white heatspreaders cos they match the motherboard.

What monitor is it specifically...it is pointless in my opinion to buy a gpu that does not synergize well with your monitor. For example. Resolution, refresh rate, response time, cable connection type.

If you are looking at a 1080p 60hz monitor....then I would say a 1070 would do great. But need those monitor details dude

CPU: Ryzen 7 2700x cooled by Pure Rock Slim // RAM: Gskill Flare X 3200mhz CL14 2x16 32GB// GPU: Powercolor Red Devil RX 6650 XT 8GB// Motherboard: ASRock B450m Pro 4 // PSU: Seasonic G550 Gold 80+ // Storage: 4TB pcie nvme game drive, 512 GB m.2 sata3 OS Drive, 4 TB WD Red HDD // Monitor: Samsung S22D300 21.5" 1080p 60Hz, MSI 27" 1080p 144hz Freesync 1ms display // Peripherals:  Logitech fancy shmancy keyboard and moise with rgb and gaminess stuff, very fancy | Kingston HyperX Cloud Core headset

I picked the sea hawk because it should run quieter under load, it has a 120mm rad and i can get a second fan for it to boost the cooling performance if necessary. I don't see myself needing the extra oomph from the GPU so i'd rather spend the money on cooling and quietness

I suggest you get a gigbabyte card or evga card that can go fanless mode on idle and light games

hawing a seahawk means you have to run additional water pump noise and always on fan

CPU: Intel i7 5820K @ 4.20 GHz | MotherboardMSI X99S SLI PLUS | RAM: Corsair LPX 16GB DDR4 @ 2666MHz | GPU: Sapphire R9 Fury (x2 CrossFire)
Storage: Samsung 950Pro 512GB // OCZ Vector150 240GB // Seagate 1TB | PSU: Seasonic 1050 Snow Silent | Case: NZXT H440 | Cooling: Nepton 240M
FireStrike // Extreme // Ultra // 8K // 16K

Is it a standard thing on cards from those manufacturers, or do I have to check if its supported on a given card?

That does look good, I'll definitely be reworking my list to include some of those parts - but I need a larger HDD, and i like the mastercase - I have an old blu-ray drive I can put into the build as well

should be standard for aftermarket 1000 series cards

but the product page or box will still have 0db fan or fanless or silent, or something like that for marketing

Great monitor except that it is a free sync monitor which only works with and GPUs . Are you able to find this monitor, but with gsync that works with Nvidia cards. If you already have that monitor....then you could / should go amf

Thanks, hadn't noticed that - but would the monitor still work? Gsync/Freesync tach wouldn't work, but th monitor should, Right?

Yes the monitor will still work. Still highly recommend getting a gsync monitor....really great tech imho

You could do something like this for less money.

I don't think the MSI Seahawk is worth an extra £150 or so over the Asus gpu in this spec. You could also get the KFA2 HOF GTX 1070 for less which would also fit a Black/White colour scheme.

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/kfa2-geforce-gtx-1070-hof-8192mb-gddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-092-kf.html

By going with a slightly cheaper board and gpu you can fit in the i7 6700K. It will handle things better than the i5 especially in cpu intensive games.

This is the parts list I've arrived at so far. Given the Monitors I have I doubt I'll be pushing the i5 to breaking point, so I don't see the point in spending the money on the 6700K. If I do run into CPU bottlenecks, I should be able to get a stable OC on the i5 to run it at 4GHz, but as I said I doubt that will be necessary.

I think I'm more likely to run into GPU bottlenecks, so I've gone for a slightly more expensive 1070 with a slight OC. Working that into my original build, along with some of the parts RKRiley suggested has netted me this:-

PCPartPicker part list: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/M2CPQV

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor  (£215.99 @ Aria PC)
CPU Cooler: Corsair H115i 104.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  (£125.32 @ Aria PC)
Motherboard: Asus SABERTOOTH Z170 S ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  (£181.39 @ More Computers)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory  (£84.99 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Crucial MX300 525GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (£112.48 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Toshiba 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  (£75.00 @ Aria PC)
Video Card: Zotac GeForce GTX 1070 8GB AMP! Edition Video Card  (£409.97 @ Ebuyer)
Case: Cooler Master MasterCase Pro 5 ATX Mid Tower Case  (£129.95 @ Overclockers.co.uk)
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA G2 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  (£79.99 @ Amazon UK)
Wireless Network Adapter: TP-Link Archer T9E PCI-Express x1 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi Adapter  (£49.98 @ Ebuyer)
Other: White PSU Cables (£67.99)
Total: £1533.05

Which also includes some custom white cables for the PSU and an AC wireless card

You can easily push the 6600k to 4ghz, probably 4.5ghz+ with that cooler (it's overkill).

i5-6600k (4.6) | Dark Rock 3 | MSI GAMING X 1060 6GB | 8GB DDR4 | 120GB SSD & 1TB HDD | Crystal 460x

 | Acer GN246HL 1080p 24" 144hz & Acer G246HL 1080p 24" 60hz |

PSU Tier List | PC Partpickers: US Canada Australia UK
