SSD vs HDD

Right, here the dilemma: My friend wants a pc, I found a secondhand HP pc. It has a 500GB hard drive. My other friends reckons that I should get him a 2TB hdd (the guy said that he might download some games), I say that he should have an ssd...what do you think?

EDIT: he has $300. $200 for the pc, $80 for the GPU, he has $20 and I'm willing to contribute a bit

500GB really isn't much now days. I would say split the difference and go for a 1TB HDD and a 250GB SSD for boot drive. 120GB would do, but 250GB allows for some more programs and games on the SSD.

You reckon?

Yes, that would probably be best (Unless he really needs that extra storage).

How much are you willing to pay? $20 isnt much, you will be lucky to get a 1TB used for that price (Less probably).

So, $20 for storage? What I'd recommend really depends on how long it will be until he can upgrade.

If he'll be able to afford a new HDD when he runs out of space, go for something like a 120GB Adata SP550 for $40 and buy another HDD down the line. If he's not going to be able to get more storage, go for a $40 1TB HDD now.

That's assuming you're willing to contribute $20.

yea, getting a cheap SSD for a boot drive, and keeping the 500GB HDD is probably the best option at the moment, although he probably will need to buy another HDD/SSD for more storage down the line if he uses it all/majority of it

He has 20$ and your willing to contribute a bit, and you want to recommend him an SSD? Even for 40$, you cant get a 2TB HDD unless its a WD Green and its used/discounts are applied to such a product (and these drives are slow, because i do have one :/).

Mightaswell stick to that 500GB HDD for now?

With such limited budget I agree on cheap 120gb ssd (will probably need to be replaced in couple of years) with 500gb hdd.

He doesnt need best PC straight away. Parts like storage are cheap and easy to obtain. Next month he can buy 1TB HDD for $30-40 no problem imo. I personally dont need more than 1TB storage for games (currently using around 500GB because I uninstalled games I dont play).
