so i found someone really close to me that is selling an avamar m2400 storage node really cheap... think 150 bucks cheap (normally $18,000). now heres the question i have. here are the specs:

NTEL XEON E5-2683 1.8GHZ - 32GB (8GBx4) MEMORY MODULES since it has some rather regular server gear in it is it able to run esxi? windows server? or does it only boot to the propriatary software? i cannot find any info on it online. very obscure...

Most likely it will always work with Windows Server 2012 or below. Linux, etc.

what are my odds? dont want to spend $150 for something that might not even boot into a proper os, 14 cores and 28 threads is pretty good especially for esxi... also it dosent come with hdd trays... pretty risky

The system will be able to install Windows Server 2012, there shouldn't be any odds if its a server.

well see thing is that the avamar line of products is emc's storage node series... and from what i understand is that they ship with their own proprietary os, cpus and ram shouldn't be a problem handling windows server, but will the motherboard?

The server appears to be a casual intel server with a normal wr2600-ish (?) motherboard and that should be just fine for any server os. Avamar/emc could have loaded it with a custom/altered bios but that wont be the end of the world seeing as it will most likely still be able to boot an os and if not you should be able to flash it using the tools given by intel.

Edit: Depending of config oafcourse but thats a damn good deal.

You'll have to contact the manufacturer or check online.
