4k TV black bars... help!

My family just bought a new Samsung 4k smart TV, model 630D. Almost every TV station puts massive black bars on both sides of the image, basically resulting in a 30" picture on a 50" screen. I've tried everything! The box is set on 1080i and is connected with an HDMI cable to the TV. The aspect ration is set on 16:9. I've tried zoom, but it ends up just cropping half the pictures. This problem only happens when watching live TV, not on the smart hub or anything. Any help is appreciated! Thanks

I just use U-Verse's TV service... whatever box they hooked up is all I use.
