I have a Define R5 and the cases should be the same except the Define S has different mounting for HDDs, SSDs... and the filter removal is different... I think there were some other minor details but I don't think USB 3 ports would be any different.

I do own it. No, they're both fully USB data and power functional.

One of mine never recognises anything I plug into it

Check the cable if it's fully seated/connected on motherboard's USB 3.0 connector. If it is, than something's faulty there. Also check BIOS/UEFI if there are any settings regarding front panel USB.

Yup it's seated correctly(I took apart my pc too many times in the last months since I had it to do proper cable management) and I don't remember seeing anything about front usb in the bios last night.

Problem was my motherboard... after some tinkering with the usb 3 headers olnly one of them allows both usb3 ports to send data and the other only allows one to send data and the other is charge only... I'll have to look at my manual and see if that's normal or if to send it to asus.

Did you check your BIOS?
