Do you really need the power of a GTX 1080? a GTX 1070 would be more than enough.

What resolution is the '144Hz' monitor?

You will always have a bottleneck in your system, no matter what you do (you cannot build a perfect system). The question is just how much. Your build will have minor bottlenecks in CPU intensive games with a 1070, but it's totally reasonable.

Well a GTX 1070 is perfect for that resolution.

Buy the GTX 1070 now and then get the monitor later.

Just buy the 1070, no need to buy anything else (of course you can, but there is no need).

In Norway right now:

GTX 1080 cost +40% more but gives only ~+20% more performance if at all that much.

This is not in favor for a GTX 1080. Assuming you have too much money and don't care about money -> get a Titan XP.

Else go with the GTX 1070.

If on 2k the 1080 is perfect, I've always bought xx80 series cards but they are never enough. My CPU holds me back on the one game I currently play so for me a 1080 is"overkill".

Main RIg Corsair Air 540, I7 9900k, ASUS ROG Maximus XI Hero, G.Skill Ripjaws 3600 32GB, 3090FE, EVGA 1000G5, Acer Nitro XZ3 2560 x 1440@240hz

Spare RIg Lian Li O11 AIR MINI, I7 4790K, Asus Maximus VI Extreme, G.Skill Ares 2400 32Gb, EVGA 1080ti, 1080sc 1070sc & 1060 SSC, EVGA 850GA, Acer KG251Q 1920x1080@240hz

GTX 1080 for 1080p would be total overkill.

1070 will perform very well at 1440p as well.

The i5 will bottleneck if you are trying to hit 100+ fps at 1080p.

In short: Get a RX 480, buy what you need don't future proof.

In a bit longer:

There are different ways of approaching it, I will write you what I did when building a PC this month.

PC ended up being

- 6700k + Noctua NH-D15

- cheap Gigabyte Z170 board

- 24GB of RAM

For the GPU I initially went for the RX 480, my first ever AMD product. Would have kept it but well it was dead on arrival. So sent it back and got a GTX 1070 on black Friday sale.

My thoughts on initially getting a RX 480 over the GTX 1070.

The RX 480 is cheap and good enough for what I would do.

Comparing the prices, using Norwegian numbers with 2000kr ~ 200$ what applies to tech products.

RX 480 4GB ~ 200$

GTX 1070 8GB ~400$

My idea was to do a 200$ / 400 $ = 2.

Meaning if buying a GTX 1070 now I would have to keep it twice as long as an RX 480 to pay off for me personally. (This may not apply to everyone.)

Looking at the GTX 970 it sells used for 50% of the original price now, that may happen to the GTX 1070 in one year, so it won't help if you say "I get more on re-sell value for investing more now".

Hope this helps, please share your thoughts.

thank you, i dont really like amd products but in Israel the prices are:

Rx 480 is 320Dollars

GTX 1070 is 560Dollars

theres a big difference.. is RX 480 good enough? for the next few years? i play with 144Hz with actually a  freesync capability..

i dont know what to do.
