HTPC not working

I bought an MSi Cubi with a pentium, I installed 4 GB of ram, and a 120 GB SSD. I tried to use Linux Mint and Kodibuntu via usb but it doesn't work, like the screen just goes black, any ideas?

yeah it turns on, goes into bios

I haven't used a kubi, so does it need to have it set to boot from USB in the BIOS? or F11 select boot device?

Its a barebones system so you have to install your own OS, I tried Linux Mint, Kodibuntu, Windows 7 and it goes to the installation screen for about 5 seconds then just goes black and shows an error screen. (sorry if this reply is late)

LOL, yeah I know you have to install an OS... I was asking basically if you had set it to boot from USB. When you said

It was unclear where the USB wasn't working from. I know this is another obvious thing for most people, but you did actually have a bootable USB right? not just put the .iso on the USB stick?

yeah its actually bootable, it goes on the installation screen and everything, it just goes black right after I see it.

Are you using the right version eg x86 or x64? is the USB configured for GPT or MBR etc?

Try ubuntu 16.04, I have had that booting off all kinds of hardware without a problem at all, server, desktop, laptop, Pi... all work fine.

If still no luck, you may need to double check you have everything where it should be and check the RAM for problems maybe.

 

Just out of interest, how long was it on blank screen for before you decided to switch it off/reboot?

Just out of interest, how long was it on blank screen for before you decided to switch it off/reboot?

 

It actually goes to the BSOD when I use windows, sometimes it just freezes, and sometimes it restarts for me. The RAM doesn't seem to be faulty as it does show up in BIOS. I once left it on for 3 hours using Linux Mint, and there was just a bunch of white text on a black screen that didn't change for the 3 hours.

OK, only thing I can suggest then really:-

 

1. Download  Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way
2. Download ubuntu 16.04  https://www.ubuntu.com/download
3. Use Rufus to make a bootable USB of ubuntu... set it to GPT partition scheme for UEFI.
4. Plug in the USB we just made and boot from it.
5. Follow the on screen instructions for setup.

problem is that I can't get to the on screen instructions, I see it for like a second then I get the BSOD.

I mean use a working computer to make the USB... then plug it into the cubi and boot from it. If you still have problems, post back and we'll go from there.

I requested an RMA, I sent it back, I am pretty sure somethings broken, nothing boots from it. 

The SSD and RAM are both working, I think its something to do with the Cubis motherboard.
