The 3820 is probably slightly better than the 3770k but then you have to remember that you can't overclock the 3820. It really depends on what you plan on doing. The 3820 is marginally faster than the 3770k at stock. X79 quad channel memory is a plus and a minus. Plus is faster RAM, minus is you have to buy quad channel kits. Gaming if you're going more than dual GPU then X79 is better because it has more PCI-E channels. Again its mostly up to you.

with the FSB the same way people overclocked before intel and amd unlocked the multiplier.

3770K would be my choice.

the ivybridge processors are around 5-10% (I think) faster than sandybridge.

and since both are quad cores they're on equal ground.

I would wait until the IB version of the 3820 comes out,or see if it does come out.because being able to write to 4 sticks of ram simultaneousness would be an advantage in hardcore video editing.

though if you need a pc right now I'd say z77 platform.

-cheaper

-slightly better stock clock performance

-more options for motherboards

-unlocked multiplier for easier overclocking

Go the 3770K unless you intend to get the 3930K.
LGA 2011 will remain available for server/heavy workstation use, whereas LGA 1155 will be overtaken by LGA 1150. So, yes, in essence 1155 is a dead socket.

However, in my general experience, by the time a new CPU becomes a necessity, your whole system needs doing as well.

I would get the 3770K, keep it for 3 years and get a new computer after that time. The 3930K is preferable, but very expensive. Personally I wouldn't get the 3820, however if you really do intend to upgrade every year then perhaps it isn't a bad choice.

Go for the 3770k on the Z77 1155 socket, if you get good motherboard it should last years until you have to change it, and by then you would have gotten your moneys worth out of it. But if you really need the extra cores for editing heavy stuff, then go with the 3930K.

The 3770k general beats the 3820 in gaming and most things. In gaming the 3770k is often better than a 3930k. I would stick to a Z77 for gaming and general use, only go to X79 if your going to be video rendering or using high end multi threaded software. An maybe if you going got record while gaming as it seem more cores help when gaming and recording with the likes of Fraps.

Well you can but then if you want to go quad channel even if you buy the exact same kit of RAM there's no guarantee it will work. Quad channel kits are guaranteed verified to work in a quad channel environment, just like dual channel kits are tested for dual channel configs. Its really up to you but it's kind of a waste leaving all those channels unused. And Z77 may or not go dead, it really depends on Intel and even then you would probably still need to upgrade in a few years time anyways.
