Hey everyone,

So basically I have a USB 2.0 device what keeps connecting & disconnecting when plugged into my computer. I have tried several different troubleshooting methods but have had no prevail so far (updating bios, power settings, etc).

Also it's not the device, as it works/connects fine with my MacBook Pro (the device was made for windows 8.1/10).

I have windows 10 also.

EDIT: Device is an external IDE hard-drive using an adapter to make it connect externally.

Thanks everyone xD

How long is the USB cable? I got the same thing happening when using a long cable (I think it's somewhere in the neighborhood of 4m long) (it is a WangHangCharlie cable, to be fair)

It's around 30cm. Works with macbook, so don't think its that.

What kind of device is it? If's its a device that needs drivers you could try uninstall the specific drivers for it. :)

The device is an external IDE hard-drive using an adapter to connect it externally.

is the cable hardwired into the adapter? if not, try a different cable "as confirmation"

also, does it have external power or does it rely on the usb port for power? it may be that that specific computer does not like the device drawing that much power and i shutting it down for safety reasons..

Cable is hardwired.

I got external power going to it aswell, as previously stated it works with my macbook fine so it's not the adapter.

iffy cables can do very weird things, it could be as far as your PC outputting 0.1 volt less, and that making it trip over the edge.

i just want to 100% eliminate hardware faults before telling you to do software things that are harder to reverse than unplugging a cable.

have you plugged it into any other USB's ? Also try rewiring your PC again and plugging the USB wires in again. Happened to me, front USB's stopped working just unplugged them and plugged them back in.

so it works on mac but not windows. it has an external power supply. bugger. you can test if your windows PC has a damaged USB by tapping the cable while plugged in. I cannot imagine it would need drivers but sometimes Windows is a dick with drivers. Is Windows being a dick or is the port loose?

Other USB devices work fine on the same ports.
