z170-e ssd/m.2 problems..

Aight so.. helping my father with his new build...

He has a m.2 drive he just bought and we saw the bios wasn't detecting it so we looked around and found we needed to enable it via the bios but now here the problems.. We only get 2 options

SATA Express or M.2
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When we enable M.2 his SSD's arn't detected and when we enable SATA Express his M.2 doesn't work and Windows doesn't detect the M.2 atm..

If we were to install Windows on the M.2 would it possibly detect the SSD's even tho they arn't being detected in the bio? I'm gonna say no but idk..

The board says it supports BOTH M.2 and SATA soo what gives?

quick reply.. yes he has the latest and greatest bios updates n everything. checked all of this etc..

M.2 shares SATA mode with SATA Express. Change this item before installing M.2 SATA devices.

 

you don't happen to have your SSDs plugged into sata express, do you?

Ahhh so we gotta move the SSD's away from SATA Express? because yes I believe his SSD's are in the SATA Express slots.

can't hurt to try

Sometimes those slots are also hard-wired to other ports.  ie: you may lose the use of a certain SATA slot if you use a M.2 SATA device.  Are you sure you've read the manual and made sure these things are in order?

unplug everything and leave only the m.2 in he motherboard

We got it working. it was like Shadowbyte said the M.2 was taking up the SATA Express so we moved them to regular SATA and it's all working fine
