So I took the advice I picked up here and got an i5 6600k, an asus z170ar, an asus gtx 1060 6gb oc edition, a Samsung 850 evo ssd, wd black, and 16gb of corsair lpx 2666mhz ddr4 ram.

Oh and I'm cooling the cpu with a hyper 212 evo

I put this together over the weekend and tried to play gta 5 on 900p with med/high settings (game defaulted to ultra high) Why am I getting so much frame lag (some instances where I get 40 fps) I'm currently over clocking my gpu but not cpu

Also is it worth it to get a closed loop liquid cooler like the h100?

One last thing, I broke the USB 3.0 header on my motherboard and wanted to know if there was a fix for that, I called asus and they wanted to charge me the price of a new motherboard.

Obviously you broke it they aren't going to replace something for free that wasn't their fault. As for fixing it, nope your boned, you'll need to live with it or buy a new mobo.  Unless your doing serious Overclocking I wouldn't bother upgrading your cooling solution.'

As for the bad performance I'm not sure I don't have GTA5 but you should be able to play at high resolution and settings with that setup.  Maybe you have something enabled that that is a serious resource hog.

have you made sure that all your drivers are installed?

did you use the newest driver version from Nvidia?  because lots of folks (myself included) have seen terrible, sub-par and laggy performance from it kinda like you are describing.  If that's the case then go to nvidia's driver site and pick an older driver (I'm using 369.09 from july)

Are you using a 900p monitor?  if not then you should try your screens native resolution, it'll look way better i think

edit: other questions, the h100 I wouldn't mess with unless you start overclocking and really enjoying it.  It wouldn't make a bit of difference right now.

As far as the 3.0 header, sounds bad but post a pic and we'll see.  There are always a lot of different ways to break things and some are worse than others.

I updated all the drivers yesterday and they are the newest versions, maybe ill try an older version, and im using a 1080p monitor but i lowered it to 900 because of the frame lag. I might start overclocking so the h100 seemed like a nice thing to have for when i decide to because having an unlocked cpu and not oc seems like a waste haha. For the header it was just 2 of the far left pins, one port in the front of my case works and one doesn't.

Im monitoring both cpu and gpu usage percentages as well as temperatures and none of them should be causing this lag, gpu usuage was like 50% and cpu temps were  50c

I'd be willing to bet it's the drivers then. I had issues with this particular latest driver and even saw a post about it here in the news section I think saying that a lot of the users of this latest driver. Apparently it isn't very uncommon either so probably a good idea to avoid the brand new drivers in the future too imo

Edit: found it

H100- you can still oc on a good air-cooler, no problems. I had a noctua nh-d14 for a while before watercooling and I was able to get my 4790k to 4.8ghz. I guess it just depends on what you like to do.

Usb3.0- did you break the 2 pins off entirely?

you should overclock your cpu.

I ended up just getting the h100 because I want to push my cpu to around 4.8 maybe a little higher, as for the usb header, this is the usb header for the usb 3.0 ports in the front of my case (nzxt z340).

uh did you try different drivers? did your problem get fixed? and the usb 3.0, I know that is what you're talking about... which is why I said that pics would be helpful.  usb 2.0 and 3.0 both use pins, its hard to know what is fixable and what isn't from just a few words, ya know?  I'm going to venture to say that if one of the 2 ports is working then take what you can get and leave it be.
