Power throttling

Hey, I have an asus 1080 strix water cooled. It is runing at 62 max under max loads, and idling on 20ish. The problem is when I overclok it I can achieve 2127Mhz easily and stable for some time, than It starts throttling, and goes down to 2050 something. I have been checking the temps in game, they never reached even 63. I think it is power throttling, I have set the core voltage to 100%, power limit 120% and so. as you see in the picture below.

I cannot keep it running on 2.1Ghz, Any help is appreciated.

Open up GPUz to the sensors tab.  Watch the "PerfCap Reason" line.  Do some testing, and if you see green, indicating "PWR" perf cap, then yes....you're hitting a power limit throttle.

Given the temps that you're talking about though, you're likely just seeing the core throttle down due to temps.  There are temp points that the GPU core will reach, and "throttle" to the next voltage up, or the next clock down, depending on the curve you chose to employ.  You're using a stock curve with a +160 offset.....this would indicate to me that this is what you're seeing, and not a power limit throttle.

Those layers exist, with boost 3.0 every 10c or so, starting at 25c.  You can avoid them, somewhat, by using a custom voltage/frequency curve.  Like in the attached picture, below.

You're using a strix card and running msi program? Think that's the problem.

Well when I used my strix, I had to use gpu tweak because I couldnt overclock as much as I should. Couldn't even get the voltage to set correctly.

Unless something came out to allow it. The manufactures locked it to their program. But if you're saying it works then I'll take my evga back and get my strix back.

Well, I ve been using asus gpu tweak, but it does not allow me to show the details on screen I  game, so I opted to use msi, as I had used it before and it shows the frequencies above 2 GHz so I will assure you that other utilities work just fine. i guess it has to do with asus card rather than msi utility. may be I am missing something. ...

That's why I don't like asus. I can't watch anything in game. I use precision x. I could not use all the features on my 1080. It may work on other cards but not  the 10 series.  With max voltage and power to 120% my card hits 2000. I don't plan on over clocking much as it's a reference pcb. But I know for a fact I could not use evgas program on my strix to adjust voltage and it take effect.  My card hits a voltage limit now,  even at max.

You probably got the limit of your card. I've seen some Pascal cards hit 2500 MHz, but those are the exception but the rule. 2050 is typical for most Pascal cards.

Yeah, afterburner or EVGA Precision X are both good programs. I use afterburner myself, but I do think you have hit the limit of your card.

Uh, no issues with MSI Afterburner on my Strix 1080. GPU software is not limited to your board manufacturer (Precision X is only NVIDIA, that's the only one).

Pretty sure it's evga. At it is limited is some regards. When I tried to use it, it didn't work. Got gpu tweak and it worked.

They all use the same core, which is RivaTuner.

You need RivaTuner Statistics Server in order to monitor things in-game, which MSI Afterburner's Installer comes with(which you would check off during installation. Not sure about ASUS GPU Tweak).

Doesn't matter now. Already got ride of the strix and got a subpar evga sc.

as I said it was power throttling, I did push up the curve a bit and now I am able to run 2152 stable. Thanks for everyone's help.
