Smartphone vs Compact

Hello,

 

So I just received a good amount of money I can splurge on something nice.

I do this at least once a year so I can see where my money goes to.

 

At the moment I'm looking into buying a camera.

I plan to travel a decent amount come 2017 and of course snap some memories to show off on Facebook

 

I already have a decent phone (does its job as a phone)

But the camera is really bad.

 

So either I upgrade to a better one, or just buy a separate compact camera (I hate bulky ones)

Let's say I can get a Huawei P9 for 300$-ish.

Would it be better than a 300$ camera?

 

P.S.

• I have no substantial experience in photography of any sort. I just plan to get some nice-looking photos to remember my travels
• I'm currently 70% that I'll get the camera. But I'm still sweeping through all the choices (so manyyyy)

Thoughts? If you have recommendations as well, I'd be happy to note them down.

I think a dedicated compact camera will be your best bet here. Smartphone cameras are good, but they're restricted in size, so you often don't get great depth of field or zooming options. I can't comment on the photo quality, but I assume it will be very similar.
