What OS are you using?

I have a Syba SI-PEX4004 which works great and is/was cheap.

Ah yeah, 40064, my bad. And, it handled two 4tb WD Reds just fine in my NAS.

You are looking for a Host Bus Adaptor (HBA). Intel doesn't make these. The best ones are made by LSI, you can find them rebranded under many brands like IBM, or just directly.

Looking to buy GTX690, other multi-GPU cards, or single-slot graphics cards:

Intel doesn't make HBA's, but they have branded cards from lsi.

I would probably get used lsi 9211 8i

yea i had a look. very expensive. i think it would be cheaper to upgrade my motherboard, or buy a proper server. Stocks for computer parts are very low in NZ for some reason

I actually used that Syba in my personal computer for a long time - worked well. I wouldn't go filling it with SSDs or anything, but it handled 2 SSDs and a couple mechanical drives fine for me.

A favorite of the FreeNAS community is the IBM ServeRAID M1015 card, originally a RAID from LSI card, which you can easily reflash to LSI 9211-8i in IT mode (initiator target) HBA, which means you can connect up to 8 SATA drives via the dual SFF8087 connectors with breakout cables.

This gives you can incredibly cheap (70-80$), performant and reliable setup for a home setup.
