Simple question: will a cheap USB soundcard help improve my microphone quality (remove background noise etc.)?

It depends on your motherboard, the microphone, and the specific USB sound card.

Contrary to what the others are saying, it can have a huge impact. It also could in theory make it worse if you get a crappy one and your motherboard already has good audio.

When in doubt, re-format.

I've seen some videos on Youtube of USB soundcards almost completely removing the static noise of a modmic. Idk how well that works tho.

Like I said, entirely depends on the specific USB soundcard vs the audio on your mobo. If you enlighten us with your motherboard, maybe Ill be able to give some insight.

When in doubt, re-format.

I'm using an msi z97s krait edition motherboard. https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/Z97S-SLI-Krait-Edition.html#hero-overview

So from a little bit of digging on t'interwebs and I have seen a few people complaining that the recording quality is pretty bad with motherboards using your same audio chip (Realtek ALC892).

The general consensus is a USB sound card helps.

When in doubt, re-format.
