So, what is happening is that every so often, even when I tell win updatw to let me choose when to install updates, it freezes for 5 minutes, restarts, and then the update hangs ,requiring me to do an emergency shutdown. The device is an asus F553M in mint condition. I would rather not do a windows reinstall

Change it from ask me to never update. if you do that it will only update if you ask it too.

You must not have experienced windows 10 yet...

OP, is your computer on the anniversary update of windows 10 yet?

When in doubt, re-format.

no, it isn't

If you are on win10 but don't have the anniversary update, I would recommend you manually download and install it, then try doing a search for updates.

Ill post some gooder instructions on this in a minute.

When in doubt, re-format.

If you want Windows Updates to be disabled completely, you can just deactivate the service (I did it on all my PCs):

Windows-Button -> Search for "services"

Look for "Windows Update" -> right click -> properties

Disable it, and stop the running process.

Here is a link from microsofts software catalog. http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB3176938 (download the 64 bit version if you have 64 bit windows, the non-marked one if you have 32 bit windows) IIRC you will have to use IE to use this site, as other browsers will not work. I'm not entirely sure that this is the full anniversary update, but it is a cumulative one that should straighten out windows update problems.

EDIT: looks like Microsoft update catalog works with edge now, it did not when I tried 2 weeks ago.

When in doubt, re-format.

Good luck on the update. Another part of the providing is probably not from Windows, but ASUS. Their W8 and W7 machines have very horrible support with W10. I how it works, but W10 will be glitchy. I have many ASUS laptops and desktops that don't play well with W10. No driver support for their hardware.
