So my internet is rather limited (capped) and I'm looking for a local cache for youtube viewing so I'm not downloading videos more than once. Iv used the youtube-dl script in the past but its kinda annoying doing things manually. Im wondering if anyone has any useful information in having youtube videos save automatically to disk, like using a proxy cache.

I found this but I haven't tried it yet https://cachevideos.com

I've used squid for this before, just remember caching only works on multiple views of the video (generally multi user networks). If you don't often view the same video or no one else will on your network then actual benefit will be very minimal.

Where squid will pay off more is caching ads and other image/page content that is used across the same website or across many websites. This works no matter how many people are on your network or how often you repeat view something and only gets better the more users there are. FYI you can also block ads using squid too.

I don't know much about squid, but a possible issue I see is with most things being served over HTTPS would mean you wouldn't be able to capture that much. With youtube being served over HTTPS now, I'm not sure how well that would work.

I don't know if you have set up some sort of HTTPS interception on your network, and then you might be able to make that work, but I'm not entirely sure. I'd be interested in knowing if this works out for you.
