corsair Purchasing Decisions: Memory Compatibilty and Stability

Hello guys! 

 

So I'm planning in buying new memory soon and I want it to be operating at 2666Mhz. Now the new motherboard I'll be getting will only support up to 2400 Mhz but I know it can go a bit higher (Z170 Sabertooth Mark 1) based on reviews. So, should i just go out and buy 2666Mhz-rated DIMMs or should i go for slightly higher DIMMs, say 3000Mhz-rated? for some headroom? if that's even a thing with memory.

 

Would really love your input on this, guys!

The z170 chipset supports XMP, so there are no memory speed limits (besides the physical hardware limit of the RAM)

Okay, so if the XMP sets it to say 2666 MHz, and the DIMMs themselves are rated at 2666MHz, I'll be fine with using them at that speed for prolonged periods of time? I don't need to get 3000MHz DIMMS for some headroom?

Nope. XMP will allow you to run RAM at whatever theater speed is if the ram.
