Hi,

I am planning to do my first PC build and I am using PCPartPicker.com to choose most of my hardware. I went with the Asus X99 Deluxe II Motherboard and the Intel Core i7 6800K, which I chose because I want to mostly game, but also for productivity. PCPartPicker is saying that my Motherboard may need a BIOS update, prior to using a Broadwell-E CPU.

How would that be done? This is still my first build and I don't REALLY know what that means.

usually i think you download the bios update into a USB and launch from there. anyway a BIOS update means there is a firmware update to help the motherboard run more stable and such. it could mean more features or fix a shitty bios.

Well before you even buy it, you have to consider what that means: the motherboard needs a BIOS update because the motherboard cannot use the CPU until it's updated. The problem, unless they fixed it, is you can't update BIOS unless there's a CPU installed.

wait so if there needs to be a BIOS update, and the CPU won't work unless there is the BIOS update, how does that work..?

Requiring a BIOS update for CPU compatibility means there's an earlier CPU it's compatible with, i.e., a Haswell-E CPU for X99.

OP can probably find a more recent board that is compatible out of the box.

Thanks, for the reply, so I should try to find a board that is compatible out of the box with the CPU?

Yes, which I don't know what that would be other than something released within the past few months or so. Or whenever Broadwell-E was released.

Asus motherboards that have the USB BIOS Flashback can have their BIOS updated using a USB flash drive. No cpu or memory needs to be installed on the motherboard.

Not all Asus motherboards include the feature.

BIOS updates are specific to each motherboard and typically found at the manufacturer's web site.

See http://event.asus.com/2012/mb/USB_BIOS_Flashback_GUIDE/ for USB BIOS Flashback directions.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
