I have an old lga775 machine that I'm thinking about throwing a quad core into and using that for a file server.  Probably plex and NVR functions is about all I'm going to do right now.  Two 2tb hitachi drive's and order a 1-2tb WD purple drive.

My first question would be, is this going to be ok for a basic server?

Second, which cpu should I get?  Q6600 QX6700 one of the xeon's?

mobo is Asus P5W DH Deluxe

It's fine for experimenting.

If you are planning to run it 24/7 for months/years, i would get something newer so power consumption can go down.

For servers power consumption is a big factor, especially if electricity isn't cheap in your area.

CPU wise, get the one with a relatively low TDP.

You really don't want that QX6700 unless you need an extra heat source to keep you warm through the winter :D

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

Maybe I should just start with a rack mount case then? I started this whole thing with gusto, but got put off pretty quick when my initial dual 1366 build fell on it's face because the mobo I had picked out couldn't fit any case available at an affordable price.  Then trying to figure out the used market was next to impossible so I gave up.  Today I got to thinking about it again and figured I could make a small investment on my old 775.

So what I have now is that 775 machine with an 820d and two 2tb hitachi drives in my backup gaming rig.  I have a few odd's and end's laying around.

I'm wiring my house for cat6 and have been thinking about PoE cam's on the outside of my house.

Where would you start?  I think I will get a piece for it every now and then and if I end up with some free cash might get a few thing's at once.

edit: oh I have acronis on my machines, bought that a few month's ago so I can make drive images for friends and family members, that way when they routinely trash an OS I can just load up a fresh image instead of installing updating etc.

I've been browsing this section of the forum, and everyone seems to love Synology, maybe I'll be better off in the long run to just spend the $400 on a diskless NVR and be done with it.  Easier to setup and use.

Then if I want to do a NAS I could do that separate.
